Commissioned Work: "Texas Flag Barn" - 9 x 12 soft pastel on mounted black Canson velvet

Some commissions just capture your heart and imagination... this one did for me. The client had seen my graphite work and sent me pictures of this barn and field, and she asked if I could draw it (grayscale in graphite). After seeing it, I just knew that it needed to be in color. This would be a gift for her father-in-law's birthday. The family was selling the property, and it had been a place of wonderful memories for the whole family. She had several requests: that the "mule" (ATV) be included, that the several different varieties of wildflowers (Texas green thread, blanket flower, and prairie verbena) be included, that there be a deer in the painting, and that there be an "indication" of a dead wild boar in the painting. It was such fun doing this piece knowing all of these elements held special significance for the family.

Client’s comment: “Thank you and I can’t wait to hear my father in law’s reaction. You are so talented and so appreciate you doing this special piece for us!!”

Recipient’s wife's comment: “This artwork that we received for (my husband’s) birthday gift… oh my, I barely glanced at it because I was afraid I was going to cry. You could not have ever given him anything he would love more. It’s just amazing, perfect, gorgeous.”

Mission accomplished!!

from painting this piece in soft pastel. I painted from a photo I had taken years ago while driving along a nature trail in Gatlinburg. I began with PanPastel to lay
in the large shapes in the underlayer, then I used mostly Blue Earth, Schmincke, Sennelier, and Terry Ludwig soft pastels to finish. Also, the brilliant Rich Mullins' song "The Color Green" was the perfect
accompaniment to paint along with...

"Misty Mountain Memory" - 9" x 12" pastel on dark blue Pastelmat paper

This pastel painting was done from a photograph I took in the Smokies a number of years ago while out driving along a nature trail. Everything in sight was covered in green... moss, leaves, light, rocks, reflections... all the greens. It was the perfect piece to break in many of the new pastels that I had gotten earlier this year. (See unboxing video from February.) I used mostly Blue Earth, Schmincke, Terry Ludwig, Sennelier pastels and PanPastel for this one. Stay tuned for a process video...

This was a Christmas commission for precious friends of many years. Combining photos of the home decorated for Christmas and wonderful photos of brilliant sunsets they had captured from their yard was so much fun. Pastel was just the perfect medium for this one! It is such a gift to me to be able to do things like this for treasured friends!!

This is my newest pastel piece, inspired by a phot

This is my newest pastel piece, inspired by a photo I took years ago while walking around Epcot in Walt Disney World. The sunset that evening was spectacular, as Florida sunsets often are. I am so pleased to say that this latest piece was juried into the Red Rock Pastel Society's Juried Member Exhibition and also into Southeastern Pastel Society's “Luminosity” 2025 Juried Virtual International Open Exhibition.
