So happy I can share this recent piece that I did from a very old photo of mine, from a trip to the Smoky Mountains. For those of us who had a piece juried into the Red Rock Pastel Society Of Nevada's 2026 Juried Online Members Exhibition, we were asked to wait until the show opened to share. Well, the show opened today! I am very grateful to have had this piece chosen to be juried into the show by one of my favorite pastel artists, Stephie Clark.

This is The Old Mill in Pigeon Forge. It's a pretty iconic location for those who travel often to the Smokies. When I took the reference photo, we were out walking across the bridge and the sun was just glistening off the water in such a sparkly way. I tried to capture that feeling of sparkle in this painting.

Pink hydrangeas are so beautiful. This one started out as play for me, while in between commissions. I was literally just puttering around with an old sheet of La Carte doing just one of the blossoms, and then decided -- well, why not paint more. I'll bet you can you guess which blossom came first. 😊

“Little River Falls in Spring” – 12″ x 16″ pastel on Richeson Gator Board

This pastel painting was done from a photograph I took last year during a Spring road trip while we stopped at Little River Falls. This was my first time visiting this site, and it was so beautiful. Instead of greens on the bank across from us there were all these wonderful pastel purples, oranges, yellows, and light greens. It was a cold overcast day, so I tried to communicate that in the painting. I used mostly Blue Earth, Schmincke, Terry Ludwig, Sennelier pastels and PanPastel for this one.

Commissioned Work: "Texas Flag Barn" - 9 x 12 soft pastel on mounted black Canson velvet

Some commissions just capture your heart and imagination... this one did for me. The client had seen my graphite work and sent me pictures of this barn and field, and she asked if I could draw it (grayscale in graphite). After seeing it, I just knew that it needed to be in color. This would be a gift for her father-in-law's birthday. The family was selling the property, and it had been a place of wonderful memories for the whole family. She had several requests: that the "mule" (ATV) be included, that the several different varieties of wildflowers (Texas green thread, blanket flower, and prairie verbena) be included, that there be a deer in the painting, and that there be an "indication" of a dead wild boar in the painting. It was such fun doing this piece knowing all of these elements held special significance for the family.

Client’s comment: “Thank you and I can’t wait to hear my father in law’s reaction. You are so talented and so appreciate you doing this special piece for us!!”

Recipient’s wife's comment: “This artwork that we received for (my husband’s) birthday gift… oh my, I barely glanced at it because I was afraid I was going to cry. You could not have ever given him anything he would love more. It’s just amazing, perfect, gorgeous.”

Mission accomplished!!

in the large shapes in the underlayer, then I used mostly Blue Earth, Schmincke, Sennelier, and Terry Ludwig soft pastels to finish. Also, the brilliant Rich Mullins' song "The Color Green" was the perfect
